Re-Introducing the Children of Israel to the God of Israel
Each year a large number of young Israeli backpackers having completed their mandatory defence service travel across the globe to New Zealand (NZ). Many travel to other destinations too, however NZ has become renowned as a safe and friendly travel destination with wild beauty and ease of getting around.
Simon Lawry started hosting these young Jewish travellers at “Meet at the Mountain” in 2020 and restarted again in February 2023 offering accommodation and assistance to walk one of NZ’s most exciting one day walks, the Tongariro Crossing.
It is here they get to see Mt Doom (AKA Mt Ngauruhoe) from Lord of the Rings fame and enjoy the spectacular scenery while hiking around a live Volcano.
In Exodus 17 we read that God told Moses to go and tell the Children of Israel to “come and meet Me at the mountain”. The mountain of course was Mt Sinai where God introduced Himself to Israel and gave them the law. It was a pretty scary event. In many ways Mt Doom is a reminder of Mt Sinai but a prime opportunity to reintroduce these young children of Israel with the God of their forefathers. It is also an opportunity for significant spiritual conversations to take place with these young and mostly secular Jews often curious about life’s biggest questions and to share about a “better mountain”.
